Mobile Monday

Posted Jun 22, 2015

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are taking a look at one mobile game that’s evolving into a silver screen franchise, another that is disintegrating the boundaries between desktop and mobile gaming, and how mobile data speeds will soon surpass the hardline connections of the heartland.

Movie Announced for Om Nom from Cut the Rope
Recently, ZeptoLab and Blockade Entertainment announced that Om Nom, a character from the mobile game Cut the Rope will receive its own feature length film.  While mobile games based on movies are common and blockbuster console and PC games have had their small share of time on the big screen, mobile games becoming movies have been unheard of, at least until now.

As Dean Takahashi describes it, “This time a brand born in mobile gaming will make it to movie theaters, and that’s a big nod to the creativity of mobile gaming.”

Lego Pushes Cross-Platform Experience to Mobile
While one of the underlying themes at E3 2015 was the desire to offer more cross-platform titles, game developer Funcom is pushing this further with their upcoming Lego Minifigures Online title. Expected to release on June 29th, the game will support Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android devices, touting that the gameplay experience will be the same on both desktop and mobile devices.

However, Funcom isn’t stopping at a multi-platform release:  Lego Minifigures Online will offer a truly cross-platform experience wherein users will be able to continue their gameplay between their devices

20MBPS 5G by 2020
It’s likely that 4G LTE will be around for a while, but that 5G will be worth the wait. Although not expected to be implemented until 2020 according to a roadmap recently released by the ITU, 5G networks are expected to offer speeds up to 20MBPS.

Thus, in just a few years, users will have faster mobile connections than many hardline internet connections currently available throughout rural America.
