Mobile Monday: IFA Preview Edition

Posted Aug 31, 2015

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at the top news in mobile expected at IFA, the European equivalent of CES that has been a beacon of technological showcases since 1924.

Samsung and Smart Devices
Samsung is expected to unveil a new round smartwatch during the event, as well as a slew of television tech and smart home appliances. What may make the new Gear S2 smartwatch most interesting is that it is rumored to have a nano SIM card slot, which may allow the watch more cellular and data functionality when not paired with a phone. Additional details about the device are expected to be unveiled on August 3rd.

Sony Phone & Wearables
Sony is scheduled to release the details of its new Xperia Z5 phone on September 2nd, and it is also anticipated that the company will reveal “more mid range phones, wearables, or tablets” as well.

According to information leaked by an ancillary Sony Facebook page, one model oh the phone, the Z5 Premium will boast the first 4K display on a smartphone with an impressive 800ppi (double the pixel density of current iPhones) and a 3840 x 2160 resolution.

Intel Skylake for Mobile
Not surprisingly for those following Intel’s product releases, a mobile line of processors leveraging Skylake architecture is expected to be announced at IFA. As a few online retailers have already slipped mentions of this processor, products leveraging the technology are expected to begin shipping in time for the holiday season.

Huawei Smartphone & Watch

Huawei recently revealed a teaser for its new smartphone, which is slated to be unveiled on Wednesday. The phone is rumored to “implement its own version of the Force Touch technology,” though counter-rumors hint that this feature may have been pulled for this launch.

Beyond the new smartphone, Huawei is also expected to release pricing and release date information for its smartwatch originally unveiled at Mobile World Congress in March.
