Mobile Monday: Endless Vines and Counter Strike on Mobile

Posted Apr 18, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at how a new feature on Vine may inspire a new style of mobile video storytelling and geeking out over the idea of playing Counter Strike on a mobile device.

Vine On
Perhaps yet another sign that mobile users have an insatiable appetite for video content, Vine recently added a new feature allowing users to effortlessly watch videos. Alleviating the need to scroll, a new “watch” button is now available on channels that serves as a play-all when pressed.

While the immediate effect will be increased Vine views on older content, Ken Yeung of VentureBeat posed an interesting question:

“could we eventually see a miniseries with six-second episodes that you can watch on Vine from beginning to end by automatically going from one clip to the next?”

Indeed, while the short, snappy format of Vines are ideal for mobile users, the “watch” function” could introduce a new format of mobile story telling for brands: micro chapters. Of course, in an advertising setting, such a storytelling format would require modular creative & strategic targeting to know when it’s best to show a user a 6 second clip versus an 18.

Counter Strike on Mobile
Yes, Counter STrike 1.6 is now playable on Android without any streaming or mirroring setups. For anyone who originally played Counter Strike over a dial-up internet connection, the idea of playing it over 4G is laden with nostalgia-fueled endorphins.

Granted, it’s still not a fully touch experience, and users would need to use either a keyboard and mouse or a blasphemous controller to play. Details for installing the game are spelled out by Clement Renaudin at Pocket Gamer.

Nevertheless, the fact that this unofficial version of the game was created is indicative of a greater undercurrent in the mobile gaming ecosystem. Simply, users are seeking out more action-oriented titles once only available on desktop or console.

While this genre of mobile games continues to grow, it will be interesting to see which traditional game developers revive beloved franchises on mobile. Even more interesting will be how they leverage in-app purchases and mobile advertising to maximize their app economies in the new freemium-centric industry.
