Mobile Monday: Oversized Displays & Those That Wrap Around

Posted Jun 20, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at the next generation of mobile device screens, from the Xiaomi Mi Max to Apple’s latest patented concept.

Meet the Xiaomi Mi Max
If the iPhone 6 Plus wasn’t already large enough, mobile device Xiaomi recently unveiled a solution. Described as a “phone for video watching” by CNET, the Mi Max is a new phone from Xiaomi that boasts a s 6.4″ screen size. Albeit a bit cumbersome to use for casual, one-handed texting, the device admittedly wasn’t designed for such purposes. Rather, the construction, battery life, and screen were designed with two things in mind: mobile gaming and mobile video watching.

Apple’s New Patent
Last week, Apple filed patent that is creating quite a buzz. Why? Patent #US009367095 is for a new mobile device with a wrap around screen. Yes, the entire device is essentially a screen. All buttons and controls in this mockup have been moved to the top & bottom of the device. As stated in the patent application:

“The wrap around display substantially increases the available display area that can be used for display of icons, data, images, video and such.”

To spare battery life, the device will use face recognition technology to determine what side of the device a user is looking at, dimming the unused display. Of course, some apps will likely turn the entire device into a colorful showpiece, regardless of who is looking.

While both the Xiaomi and Apple device designs are indicative of our insatiable appetite for mobile content consumption, the Apple device raises an entirely new concern (aside from whether or not it will be made this decade). What case can adequately protect the phone from an increased number of falls resulting from constantly spinning it around — without interfering with the 360° touch screen?
