Mobile Monday: Unlimited Data & Fighting Robocalls

Posted Aug 22, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are rejoicing in the revival of unlimited data plans as well as the potential squashing of robocalls.

The Return to Unlimited Data
Long ago, the first iPhone data plans offered unlimited data while tightly limiting voice and texting plans. Over time this shifted, with mobile voice and messaging plans becoming increasingly unlimited as unlimited data plans were throttled and washed away. However, as numerous reporters have noted, the recent T-Mobile and Sprint scramble to offer unlimited data plans may signal “a new way for wireless” as Fortune projects that tomorrow’s data plans will be unlimited.

As carriers struggle to remain competitive in an era where users spend far more time in-app than doing anything else on their phones, so the pressure for other carriers to offer similar plans will only increase.

Fighting Robocalls
While the revival of unlimited data plans may lend to some celebration, the present fight against robocalls may cause more. On Friday, the FCC held the inaugural meeting of its Robocall Strike Force. Over thirty companies were in attendance, including Alphabet, Apple, AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, and many others.

The group is is expected to “develop and adopt new tools and solutions to protect consumers” from robocalls, the automated pre-recorded telemarketing calls that swindle mobile users every day. As Tom Wheeler of the FCC told Wired:

“Robocalls are a scourge. It’s the number one complaint that we hear from consumers on a daily basis.”

Findings from the strike force are expected to be reported in a subsequent meeting on October 19th. If successful, the strike force may be able to curtail scams that cost mobile users millions of dollars every year.
