Mobile Monday: Engaging Episodes & Disengaging the Note 7

Posted Oct 10, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at how Pocket Gems effectively engages younger mobile audiences and why mobile carriers are starting to disengage from the Samsung Note 7…possibly for good.

How Pocket Gems Engages
There is no denying the mass popularity of Pocket Gems’ array of Episode games. Their “choose your story” mantra harkens memories of reading choose your own adventure games as a kid. Recently, Michael Dawson, the Head of Studio for Episode at Pocket Gems, published an article explaining how they use active entertainment and viewer agency to engage and captivate Gen Z mobile users.

As Dawson describes it, the typical Gen Z mobile user “expects to have a starring role in their entertainment”, preferring to mold their content experiences instead of simply viewing them. This is where Episode is particularly appealing, as users choose the outcome of their protagonists.

In short, it comes down to giving users options and designing mobile-first content that “can be enjoyed in bite-sized moments“.

Disengaging the Note
As Samsung’s second batch of Note phones have proven to also be at risk of explosion, the manufacturer is having to rethink its production process as it halts production of the Note 7. Today, Samsung announced that it is “temporarily adjusting the Galaxy Note 7 production schedule in order to take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters.” It remains to be seen how long this will take. Mobile carriers T-Mobile & AT&T have ceased selling the faulty device and are offering exchanges to customers who purchased the phone.

As the return process happens shortly after the latest iPhone launch but before Google’s Pixel phone will be available, it will be interesting to see if this results in a micro shift in the balance of iOS and Android device ownership.
