Mobile Monday: Adweek’s Top Ads & the Mobile Shopping Takeover

Posted Oct 17, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are celebrating the mobile publishers whose ads earned a spot on Adweek’s top ads for September & exploring what App Annie’s new study on mobile shopping means for retailers.

Adweek’s Top Ads
Each month, Adweek compiles a list of the top video ads on YouTube. To make the cut, the videos must be promoted as ads, generate significant organic views, and have a strong video completion rate. What’s interesting about the latest list is that five of the top ten videos were for mobile apps.

Seriously’s video titled “WARNING: Don’t Download Best Fiends!” came in at #10 on the list. Lyft’s “Undercover Lyft with Demi Lovato” earned #9. Meanwhile, Clash Royale ads claimed the #3, #6, and #7 spots, and impressive feat for a single title.

Mobile’s presence on the list wasn’t limited to apps, however. Videos by Apple promoting their new iPhone 7 claimed the #1 and #5 spots on the list.

Mobile Shopping Takeover
Today, mobile app analytics company App Annie released a new study on the growth of mobile retail, and the results are rather telling. Sales through mobile retail apps are expected to grow 33% this year, and App Annie projects a 21% CAGR through 2020. Traditional retailers with mobile apps have seen time spent in their apps increase by 40% in the last year, and digital-first retailers have seen a 50% growth over the same period.

The morale of the story? Those retailers with a mobile-first mindset are reaping the greatest rewards from the shift to mobile shopping. To embrace this mindset and nurture relationships with mobile app shoppers, the report advocates 3 key best practices:  respecting the user experience by not draining their battery with needless notifications, establish and reinforce trust by not asking for more personal information than necessary, and rewarding users with loyalty programs and other promotions.
