Mobile Monday: The Continued Growth of Video

Posted Feb 13, 2017

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are examining what the latest report from Cisco means for the growth of mobile video — and the mobile ecosystem as a whole — through 2021.

Mobile Video’s Continued Growth
It’s no secret that people watch a large amount of video content on their mobile devices. According to the latest Cisco Visual Networking Index on mobile data traffic, our proclivity for mobile video viewing is only going to increase over the next few years. Indeed, mobile video viewing is expected to account for 78% of all mobile data traffic by 2021.

Video Delivery Devices
Granted, video files are larger than text, so they inherently would consume more than their share per time spent on mobile. That’s partially why it already accounts for 60% of data usage on mobile. However, what is interesting here is the growth rate of video’s share.

As Daisy Whitney of MediaPost pointed out, “the share rise is noteworthy since it underscores how easily consumers watch video on their phones now.” Indeed, the prevalence of mobile video viewership is so strong that Whitney refers to mobile phones as “video delivery devices.”

Mobile’s Overall Growth
Perhaps more impressive yet is the fact that the share of data used by mobile video is increasing within an already explosive category. According to Cisco’s report, “global mobile data traffic will increase sevenfold between 2016 and 2021,” a fact that is clearly illustrated by Business Insider:

Mobile Growth by Region
Last year, the regions that saw the most growth were the Middle East & Africa (96% growth), Asia Pacific (71% growth), Latin America (66% growth), and Central & Eastern Europe (64% growth). Western Europe (52% growth) and North America (44% growth) also had notable increases in mobile data traffic in 2016.
