We like to keep our fingers on the pulse of all things mobile here at AdColony, and we felt a big beat this week after reading eMarketer’s latest predictions for how mobile users in the UK will approach the upcoming holiday season.
M-Commerce is the Norm for UK Shoppers
The segment of UK consumers purchasing via mobile devices is growing at an impressive rate. February 2014’s research from TNS (commissioned by Google) indicated that almost a third of the UK’s population aged 16 and over made purchases via smartphones every month.
It’s also worth noting that UK retail m-commerce sales grew by triple digits in 2013 and are expected to post another 66 percent growth in 2014:
“With gains like these, mobile commerce will account for a substantial and expanding share of total UK retail ecommerce in the coming years—27.0 percent this year, almost one-third by 2015, and near 40 percent by 2018.” – UK Holiday Shopping Preview: A Merry Season Forecast For Ecommerce, eMarketer 2014
Gone Global: Black Friday & Cyber Monday
A pivotal influencer in this growth is Cyber Monday, the online-specific spin off of Black Friday*, which encourages shoppers to go online instead of hitting the high street. Experian Hitwise found that Black Friday and CyberMonday spurred almost as many online retail site visits from the UK – 113 million and 115 million, respectively – as Boxing Day, 129 million.
Combined with stats for ecommerce in the UK overall — eMarketer estimates that almost three-quarters of the UK population will make at least one digital purchase in 2014 – it looks like the holidays will be very happy for retailers that make it easy to browse and shop for their products on the desktop and mobile web.
It’s exciting to see how UK consumers are embracing the convenience of tablet and smartphone shopping – and as the largest and highest-quality-in-app mobile video ad platform in the world – we’re excited to be helping advertisers share their brands messages this holiday season.
