This week in mobile, we’re taking a look at the top takeaways from SXSW Interactive, from mobile streaming and broken hearts to Snowden and security.
Mobile Streaming Apps Dominate
During SXSW, a new app called Meerkat dominated the conversation. As mobile video consumption continues to rise and more users are taking to broadcasting their own content through providers like Twitch, Meerkat is taking the phenomenon mobile by enabling easy mobile video broadcasting. In short, it “allows people to live stream anything at the touch of a button.”
Of course, Meerkat isn’t the only app aiming to let users live stream from their mobile devices: on Friday, Twitter announced its acquisition of Periscope, another app offering mobile streaming and live sharing.
Robots, Apps, & Broken Hearts
While some SXSW attendees were excited to start live streaming videos from their phone, others were having their hearts broken on a popular dating app.
A clever stunt to promote a new film, countless Tinder users at SXSW interactive found themselves flirting with a robot. Ava, the supposedly 25 year old Tinder user, courted users through a series of questions such as “What makes you human?” and “Have you ever been in love?”
Snowden Talks Security
During SXSW, Edward Snowden held a secret talk with two dozen tech industry leaders to discuss how they can improve and champion internet privacy. Sunday Yokubaitis, President of Golden Frog, described the Q&A as a “call to arms” for tech companies to improve privacy tools. (Image Credit: The Verge)
