In this edition of Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at what makes Google’s new mobile payments solution unique and celebrating Supercell’s impressive daily active user milestone.
Hands Free Mobile Payments
If swiping a phone near an RFID reader was too troublesome of a solution for mobile payments, Google has launched Hands Free, its mobile payment solution that’s quite different than Android Pay. Compatible on both Android and iOS, Hands Free is an app that connects over Bluetooth LE & WiFi to the checkout stand. The user’s photo, as established through the app, flashes on the screen, allowing the retailer to confirm their identity.
Currently, this payment solution is only available in a few retailers in the San Francisco area, but it will be interesting to follow its evolution as app developers explore more ways to create apps that are useful even when the device is not in-hand.
Supercell Grows to 100M DAU
While the recent launch of Clash Royale may have given the Supercell team reason enough to celebrate, the surge of players battling in the new game has given them another. Supercell now has over 100 million daily active users, quite an impressive feat for any mobile app developer.
While it took the launch of their fourth app to hit this milestone, many mobile publishers with 10 or more apps have not attained 100M DAU, so congratulations to Supercell! (And RIP to the 14 concepts they scrapped along the way.) Their video celebrating the achievement is below.
