Mobile Monday: The New MZ and Coding with Nancy Drew

Posted Apr 11, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are taking a look at Machine Zone’s transformation to MZ and how a new Nancy Drew mobile game may inspire more females to code.

Machine Zone’s Rebrand
Every month, Machine Zone processes over 25 billion in-app messages for its hit titles Mobile Strike and Game of War: Fire Age. While the number is impressive on its own, what’s more interesting is that all of this happens within one world instance per game. Everyone playing is immediately connected, without the regional server separations that are typical of games of its scale.

Understanding the power of the app platform they had created, Machine Zone recently announced its rebrand as MZ, as well as its plans to offer its technology to other developers. Dubbed the RTplatform™, MZ’s new move toward becoming a licensed tech provider is still in an invite-only phase. Admittedly, it will be quite interesting to see how other mobile app developers use the tech to connect billions of users at scale in the same way MZ already has.

Coding with Nancy Drew
Game developer Her Interactive appears to be targeting the heartstrings of everyone who has ever read through a pile of Nancy Drew books (because we all checked them out from the local library by the armful, right?). After hooking children with mysteries for the last 85 years, the Nancy Drew franchise is expanding in its new mobile game Nancy Drew: Codes & Clues.

Designed to appeal to young girls, the game will also “teach the basic principles of coding” in an attempt to interest them in math & science from an early age. To make the sneakily designed edutainment fun, the premise is that users must code their robot puppy, thereby training it to help solve the mysteries. Yes, the game blissfully marries entertainment, deduction skills, programming, and puppies.

(Beware our wallets whenever Her Interactive develops a freemium title targeted at adults.)
