Mobile Monday: New Studios & Publishing Deals

Posted May 22, 2017

This week in Mobile Monday, we’re taking a look at the latest developments in mobile publishing, from new studios that have popped up to new deals that have been announced. In particular, we’re covering the latest news from Paradox Interactive, NBCUniversal, and Gamevil.

Paradox Interactive’s New Mobile Studio
Paradox Interactive, a publisher that’s better known for the strategy games put out by its Paradox Development Studio, recently announced that it is opening a new mobile games studio. The new facility, which will be based in Malmö, Sweden, will house a small team of developers “focused on bringing mobile games the kind of deep, challenging experiences the wold has come to expect” from the company.

As Kim Nordström, SVP of Innovation and Mobile at Paradox Interactive noted in the press release, “our plan is to bring the iconic Paradox style to mobile players across a broad catalog of titles.” As is always the case when a publisher embraces & pursues mobile development, it will be interesting to see how Paradox’s franchises are adapted & reimagined for a mobile experience.

NBCUniversal’s New Games Publishing Focus
Universal Brand Development, a business segment of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and part of NBCUniversal, last week announced its plans to expand its strategic focus on games publishing. Specifically, they are building out an organization to self-publish gaming titles, which will give the media powerhouse a “more direct role in the creative, development, marketing, and distribution of games” leveraging NBCU IPs.

As noted in the New York Times article on the move, Universal Brand Development plans to focus on self-publishing mobile titles only at first, with expansion to other platforms to follow down the line. The first titles are expected to launch later this year, a testament to both the sincerity of their commitment to mobile publishing as well as the agile development cycles typical of mobile.

Of course, NBCU IPs will continued to be licensed out to other developers, so existing publishing agreements will be unaffected by the studio’s bold new move.

Gamevil & Singta
Last week, mobile games publisher Gamevil announced its agreement with developer Singta. Known for its popular card RPG Sid Story, Singta is slated to develop the tentatively titled RPG Giant for Gamevil. While not much about the title has been shared yet, expect its cartoony and vibrant aesthetics to have a youthful appeal that transcends geographical boundaries.
