AdColonized: Getting to Know Emir Oltulugil

Posted Oct 5, 2017

On the weekends, you can find Emir Oltulugil relaxing outdoors and during the week, you can find him collaborating with our growth region product and sales teams to create innovative marketing strategies. As an Ad Sales Marketing Manager located in the AdColony Istanbul office, Emir spends his time brainstorming ideas for product stories, working on sales pitches, and discussing strategy in client meetings. He has experience in the branding landscape and is a total mobile gaming nerd. Step right up, Emir. It’s time to get you AdColonized!

What exactly does an Ad Sales Marketing Manager do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
Here’s that question again. Since our team is relatively new (it’s only been 6 months), I’ve been replaying this over and over again. Basically what we do is come up with strategic and marketing roadmaps for our product and sales teams. An average day for me is split between meetings with clients and thinking/creating new tools for sales pitches. Meetings feed me in terms of finding new ways tell our product story, and I put these into action in presentations/one pagers/mailings.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
I was a sociology major in college. Although it looks completely irrelevant to what I do now, I think it has helped me a lot in analyzing and making sense of data/insights. Professionally, before AdColony, I was working with something quite similar, but a different job. I was a strategist in a creative agency. From there, I became familiar with branding strategies, but it had nothing to do with mobile.

What made AdColony the right fit for you?
I’m not sure but I think it was a gut feeling that paid off big time! I was just starting on a new path and felt like I should take this chance and come to AdColony (mobilike at the time). That was a risk, but I wouldn’t change anything that happened since, if I had the chance.

How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
Personally, my curiosity and willingness to learn new stuff keeps me motivated and running. Professionally, AdColony gives me the opportunities to pursue this.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
Since it’s summertime now, I’m trying to make as many weekend getaways as I can to enjoy nature, swim when possible, and relax. However, when winter comes, I dig stay-cations with my friends to catch up, watch movies, and just chill. And regardless of seasons, I read and watch a lot of stuff. I have this sad quirk – if I read three pages of something or watch the first 15 seconds of something, I have to finish it. Even though it’s the worst movie ever, I have to sit there and watch it to the end.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
Long before AdColony, I was an avid mobile gamer, and recently I’ve been playing this mobile game called Scale like crazy. It’s quite similar to a game on my Sony Ericsson phone from the 2000’s so it’s also nostalgic and keeps me very busy during my “me time.”

What’s one thing not many people know about you that you’re willing to share?
Approximately 80% of my brain is occupied with song lyrics of all genres/languages/decades. I memorize them in no time and they never fade away. And when one of those songs start to play, I can’t help but sing along. This can get really embarrassing since some of those songs are not ones you’d be proud to know.

Do you have a nickname at work? If so, is there a story behind it?
I guess not 🙁

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
When I first accepted the job, I had 2 weeks of leave notice to complete in my former company. But there was a team event on the weekend of those 2 weeks and AdColony insisted that I join them. I wasn’t sure how that would go since I knew nobody. But that was by far one of the best weekends of my life and on my first official day at the office, I felt like I’d been working with the AdColony team for a very long time. It had all the best features of a first day without the weird, uncomfortable situations.
