Mobile Monday: Top Apps, Big Fish, and Aiming for the Top

Posted Dec 4, 2017

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are taking a look at the top apps honored by Google, what the future may hold for Big Fish Games, and how Supercell’s app release strategy is so unique.

The Best of Google Play
Late last week, Google announced its “Best of 2017” for Google Play. Nintendo’s Super Mario Run  was the most downloaded title, followed closely by Bubble Witch 3 Saga by King.

However, when it came to selecting the “best” game of 2017, Google Play editors went with CATS: Crash Arena Turbo Stars by ZeptoLab. The action PVP (player versus player) game invites users to build custom robots to take into battles.

The game currently has over 800,000 reviews averaging 4.6/5 on Google Play, suggesting that the general public enjoys the title as much as the Google Play editors.

Of course, Google Play isn’t just about games. The helpful Socratic – Math Answers & Homework Help app took home Best App of 2017.  Like the best game, this app also currently boasts a 4.6/5 user rating.

Aristocrat Leisure Catches Big Fish
Australian gambling machine maker Aristocrat Leisure Ltd  recently announced that it will be acquiring Seattle developer Big Fish Games in a move to “increase its social gaming footprint“. This comes just a few months after Aristocrat acquired Plarium Global Ltd for $500 million for the same purposes.

Big Fish Games makes games for desktop as well as mobile devices. Their most notable mobile games include Cooking Craze (2017), Fairway Solitaire (2007), Gummy Drop! (2014), Dungeon Boss (2015), and dozens more.

While the future of mobile releases by these two developers were not mentioned in the announcement, it is very likely that they will continue to churn out hit mobile games to ensure relevance for the flurry of new gaming machines that can be expected.

Supercell Aims for the Top
When it comes to top names in mobile game publishing, few are on the level of Supercell, creators of Clash of ClansClash RoyaleBoom Beach, and Hay Day. Indeed, their titles have over 100 million DAU. While some mobile publishers use a scattershot strategy to the app store and release titles monthly if not weekly, Supercell is a bit more selective in what it releases.

Indeed, according to a recent report, Supercell had developed ten new titles before its most recent launch, but chose to only release one of them. Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen stated, “we don’t want to launch games that we believe don’t have a chance to hit the top ten globally,” which is a rather bold statement when one considers the volatility of the app market.
