AdColonized: Getting to Know Erin Venables

Posted Jan 4, 2018

As one of our Business Development Managers, Erin Venables handles everything from partner communications to working with certification and programmatic teams. Erin has several years of programmatic experience up her sleeve and enjoys continually learning and challenging herself in the industry. During her free time, you can find Erin at concerts, comedy shows, and college basketball games! Erin, it’s your turn under the AdColonized spotlight!

What exactly does a Business Development Manager, Demand do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
My main focus as a BD Manager is to drive as much revenue as possible from our DSP partners across the AdColony Exchange. This means I am responsible for both on-boarding new DSPs to the AdColony platform, and working closely with our larger Tier 1 partners to increase spend month over month.

A typical day for me may include introduction calls with new demand partners globally to assess opportunity. Their business model and inventory needs must align with what we can offer as a supply partner. They also must have the technical capabilities to buy inventory programmatically with a bidder. If there’s a fit, I am responsible for facilitating commercial paperwork between the client and our internal finance and legal teams.

Next, I work closely with our certification and programmatic ops team to schedule an integration call, and ramp up spend. We are always looking for ways to grow our existing 100+ partnerships by suggesting new inventory, setting up PMP’s, and strengthening our relationships with key stakeholders that have influence over which supply partners they allocate budget to.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
Prior to joining AdColony, I had about 5 years of programmatic experience. First I worked as an AM at a small start-up company called AdMobius which did mobile audience targeting. Ironically, AdColony was our first client! After two years, the company was sold to Lotame. From there I moved to LiveRail, a video SSP. I was an Account Executive there for only a few months before we were bought by Facebook in 2014. I continued to work on the LiveRail product at Facebook but they ultimately decided to sunset the exchange in 2016. Which then brought me to AdColony!

What made AdColony the right fit for you?
AdColony was the right fit because it allowed me to use my experience in programmatic in new ways. I joined a relatively small, tight knit group to develop the commercial side of the programmatic business from what started as a traditional ad network. It also allowed me to work more closely with Ops and Product so I’ve been able to grow my knowledge on that side as well. Because the industry is constantly changing, it allows me to grow each day. For instance I need to be knowledgeable on hot topics like viewability, transparency, new RTB specs, ads.txt, mergers and acquisitions, etc.

How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
(I mentioned this above)

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
Outside of work, I can either be found at the Jersey Shore in the summer, or exploring the city in the winter. I love trying new restaurants, going to concerts, or catching a broadway or comedy show. I’m also a huge college basketball fan and do my best to get to as many Villanova games as possible. Lastly, I got engaged in August so wedding planning is taking up most of my free time!

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
My new favorite app is called HQ. It’s a live trivia game that you can only tune into at 3pm ad 9pm. It’s free but you can take home a ton of cash if you make it to the end. I’ve never come close to that as it gets pretty tough – on the bright side my brain is warmed up for the AdColony “Smart Ass” trivia game.

What’s one thing not many people know about you that you’re willing to share?
Something most people don’t know is that despite being Irish Catholic, I’m an avid Larry David fan and those close to me would probably call my obsession with Curb Your Enthusiasm slightly annoying. (My sisters asked me if I wanted to have a Larry themed bachelorette party).

Do you have a nickname at work? If so, is there a story behind it?
Nope!

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
Favorite AdColony event was the Mets game last summer. It was a beautiful day and a lot of fun to get some hang time with everyone outside of the office!
