Yoohyun Kim knows exactly what it means to multitask. She goes by Karen and she’s the Marketing Manager for AdColony for the Asia Pacific region! Karen works across her teams to organize awards, operate social channels, design creative assets, and coordinate events and swag, and that’s just the start! She previously worked for Google and SoftBank, where she gained valuable experience in both marketing and tech. Karen is a foodie, pilates enthusiast, and the feature in this week’s AdColonized!
What exactly does a Marketing Manager do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
Being a Marketing Manager at AdColony is fun and tough at the same time. You really have to be a multiplayer who communicates with various partners, coordinates events, designs creatives with a sophisticated taste, operates multi social channels, organizes for awards, handles PR, writes short pieces, and creates sales materials and swag – my favorite part! Of course, I’m not doing this alone. You reach out to people internally and externally for help. Communication is the key.
Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
Before joining AdColony, I was a Partner Marketing Manager at Google and a Product Marketing Manager at SoftBank before then. Softbank was where I performed the general BTB marketing in the tech industry and Google was where I promoted the importance of digital marketing – especially the video advertising. AdColony was where I could leverage both experiences and bring even better results.
What made AdColony the right fit for you?
AdColony is the company that gives you the freedom with the responsibility. People work together with trust and there’s always someone willing to help you when you need it. I met a few lifelong friends at AdColony. This is huge.
How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
I get regular updates from the industry and try to keep on track. As a Marketing Manager, I often face some new problems. I have one effective way to overcome this, which is just to encounter the problem and get used to solving it. Once you’ve done that, it will be yours.
What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
It’s been years of taking pilates classes after work. Not sure why the period of pilates doesn’t correlate with the flexibility of my body 😛
Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
Sleep Cycle: good sleep became one of my priorities recently for better performance as well as mental health. Sleep Cycle tracks your sleep patterns and analyzes your sleep by detecting sounds. It’s quite interesting to check my sleep report with a graph and sleep quality score every morning.
What’s one thing not many people know about you that you’re willing to share?
I’m not a heavy eater but I LOVE to eat different foods – French, Neo-bistro food, Thai, Japanese, Italian, Vietnamese, Korean and even Nordic! My favorite herb is cilantro, which many people hate. Dining always takes the top priority when traveling overseas.
Do you have a nickname at work? If so, is there a story behind it?
It’s very odd but people in our office sometimes call me Macgyver, meant for great technician. When something in our office isn’t working, like the bluetooth speakers, TV or relaxing chair, once I touch them, they start to work! It turns out I have magic hands! LOL
What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
One of my favorite moments I’ve had with the team was the APAC Sales Kickoff held in Singapore last year. Great opportunity to meet and get to know our team in Asia as well as the global management team. Most of all, onboarding on the fancy private yacht, enjoying the breeze, and watching the sunset with a cold beer and awesome music was the best!
