AdColonized: Getting to Know Francis Tinney

Posted Mar 22, 2018

Managing video production, brainstorming new ideas, and joining in on everything from strategy to design related to brand, is what Francis Tinney, Video Production Manager, does every week! After making a career change from financial services to advertising, Francis decided to channel his creativity and joined the AdColony team in London! During the week, he trains in kickboxing and kung fu, and on the weekends, he loves building Lego with his daughter! Francis, let’s get you AdColonized!

What exactly does a Video Production Manager do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
Primarily, I manage the production of videos when we get requests from our Sales and Account Management teams. I’ll look through a brief and assets, come up with some ideas or brainstorm with the team, and then set up a project. We are gifted to have an absolutely amazing creative team who is able to make sense of my ideas and produce top quality, professional final executions.

I also work on the brand side, managing the UK team’s projects. Then I generally tend to be a creative Swiss Army knife, I do a little bit of everything, joining client calls, helping with strategy, a bit of design, a bit of production, dreaming up new ideas, dabbling in 3D/CGI design, helping with team admin, pulling data, putting together documentation, etc. There’s no real average day. Every day is a little different and I love that about the job.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
I did a bit of a career change. In my former life, I worked in Financial Services for 14 years where I worked in a variety of roles from I.T Support (as nerdy as it sounds) to Corporate Foreign Exchange Dealing (sounds more exciting than it really is). I always wanted to do something a bit more creative so I took a leap of faith. I seemed to have landed on my feet.

What made AdColony the right fit for you?
Video and Advertising. As part of my career change, I studied both so AdColony seemed like a natural fit. I started as an intern in Account Management at 34 (I felt a bit like Chandler in Friends when he quits the job in finance to become an intern at an advertising company- seemed to have worked out alright for him). I knew I would have the opportunity to work in Creative with AdColony. A mixture of luck, hard work, encouragement, and support from the AdColony team and general awesomeness, made it happen.

How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
Keep an open mind, always be willing to learn something new, innovate and try and find the next big idea. Don’t shy away from doing things differently, don’t fear change. Keep working hard and just keep trying to be the best you can be.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
Well, my weekends are all about my daughter. She’s amazing and I’m so proud to be her dad. She also likes the ‘holy trinity’ of Lego, Star Wars and Transformers, which means she has the basic skills required to get through life. She’s five years old.

On weekdays, I like to do martial arts to keep fit. I train in kickboxing and kung fu. It’s primarily for fitness and to cater for my need to pretend I’m a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

I’m also an avid Guinness drinker.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
Clash Royale is pretty good. There’s a few people on it in the team so we can all have a laugh at me being constantly the office whipping boy. Farm Heroes Saga has been strangely addictive for about 3 years now. I’m on level 806 and have been invited to an exclusive party at King for FHS players. This proves my natural skill at the game or, more likely, evidence I need to take a look at my priorities in life.

What’s one thing not many people know about you that you’re willing to share?
I once bought a car off eBay. The engine blew up as I drove it home. This happened to be just outside Glasgow, Scotland. I was driving to Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England. Approximately 368 miles away.

Do you have a nickname at work? If so, is there a story behind it?
There’s a few, but for the sake of public decency, we’ll go with Tinman. I’d like to say there’s some epic dark story about having no heart like the Tinman in the Wizard of Oz but it’s more just a play on my surname. Sorry to disappoint.

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
Loads. It’s literally impossible to pick one. Let’s just say it’s been a lot of fun and I hope it continues to be a lot of fun.
