AdColonized: Getting to Know Erik Domholt

Posted Apr 5, 2018

Say hello to Video Producer and design extraordinaire, Erik Domholt! He works out of our LA headquarters and can be found diligently working on multiple Aurora™ HD Playable ads and traditional video ads simultaneously, from concept to design. Erik has years of motion graphics design experience and loves sharpening his skills with passion projects on the weekends. During his free time, he also enjoys eating Vietnamese food (who doesn’t though?) and traveling to new destinations with his wife. Erik, you’re under the spotlight for this week’s AdColonized!

What exactly does a Video Producer do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
My job is to create User Acquisition video ads that are designed to drive installs of an app or mobile game. In addition to traditional video ads, my team and I have been hard at work making interactive playable ads that give the user a little demo of the mobile game that’s being advertised, hopefully enticing them to give that install button a tap. Usually I’m handling anything from 2 to 5 projects at any given time, and I’ll take them through the concept and design phase, where I’ll then send them off to engineering and QA.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
Before joining AdColony, I was freelancing as a motion graphics designer for quite a few years. I would get work from both marketing agencies and directly from small business owners. The greatest insight I gained from that experience was the understanding that I’m not just a designer, but a problem solver who uses design as a tool to solve problems. That insight has been invaluable in my career, as it motivates my initiative to seek out a full understanding of the goals and obstacles behind a project. And with that understanding I can make more of an impact than just checking off my daily assigned to-do list.

What made AdColony the right fit for you?
Hands down the people. My team has been amazing since day one and I can genuinely say that I’m happy to see them every day. In addition, my supervisors have shown a lot of trust in me and give me freedom to make design decisions on my own. It’s a real sign of confidence that they believe they’ve hired good people that don’t need to be micromanaged.

How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
I still make personal animation projects on my own that I work on after work or on the weekends. It helps me keep my skills sharp and keeps me up to date on the animation/motion graphics industry. And it’s very rewarding!

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
I like to keep busy with animation projects, and when I’m not doing that, my wife and I like to take little trips around the city. We like to head down to the OC for Vietnamese food, or up to Huntington Library to walk around the garden. Oh, and if you’ve never been to a taiko drum performance, I highly recommend it. We’ve been to three in the past two months!

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
I don’t play many mobile games, but an app I’d recommend is The Economist: Espresso. It provides 5 short world news articles every morning. The articles are never any longer than the screen of your smartphone, so it’s really easy to read through with your morning coffee. It’s well written and for a news publication, it seems to be pretty unbiased (mostly).

What’s one thing not many people know about you that you’re willing to share?
I’m a small town Minnesota boy and my wife is Vietnamese. From before we started dating five years ago ‘till now, my life has changed drastically. I’ve been to Vietnam three times (hopefully planning our fourth trip this year), I’m learning the Vietnamese language, and we eat Vietnamese food weekly. I’ve met so many Vietnamese people, and I’m learning all about the culture and customs. I gotta say it’s been an absolute blast. Likewise, I was able to show my wife snow for the first time… and sub-zero temperatures, which wasn’t as well received. I can’t wait for the next five years and beyond. Hopefully I’ll be more fluent in Vietnamese by then, but geez it’s hard don’t cha know!

Do you have a nickname at work? If so, is there a story behind it?
Not really. I’ve gotten Thor a couple times. That could be because I’ve got long blonde hair, but I also think maybe people assume I’ve got Chris Hemsworth level abs or something.

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
I think it’s going to be hard to top listening to Alex Andronicos sing “Time After Time” karaoke at the holiday party. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard as when the DJ started singing along in an attempt to help get Alex back singing on beat.
