Mobile Monday: 3D Video Calling & Improved VR Experiences

Posted May 14, 2018

The Chinese camera phone vendor, Oppo, and U.S. chipmaker, Qualcomm, have come together to create a new 3D technology that’s never been seen before. What’s even more impressive? It’s going to be available in just six months.

3D Video Calling
The collaboration between Oppo and Qualcomm comes with a profound result: live 3D video calling that utilizes depth-sensing cameras and a fast 5G modem. 3D video calling means that your perspective of the environment will change based on your viewing angle, since objects will appear in 3D rather than 2D.

Oppo is making this possible by combining 3D scanning capabilities of 3D cameras with high-bandwidth 5G mobile connections. The company conducted their first demonstration of this technology a few days ago in Shenzhen, China. Oppo will be including the 3D video calling system in its first 5G smartphone, which will be released in early 2019.

With the future of video calling shifting towards 3D, we expect that other companies will soon follow Oppo’s lead.

New & Improved VR
Japan Display, backed by Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba, recently announced a 1,001-pixel-per-inch (PPI) display and another 803PPI display designed for VR use. These new headsets come with massive improvements to VR visuals, which will significantly boost the user experience. While the 803PPI display is around the same size as headsets currently on the market, the 1,001PPI headset comes in a smaller and lighter package.

In addition to enhanced resolution, other improvements include reduced motion blur and low latency. The 1,001PPI display also has a 120HZ refresh rate and a 2.2-millisecond “worst case” gray-to-gray response time.

These displays will be available for viewing at the SID Display Week in Los Angeles. Japan Display is expected to ship these new products by the end of March 2019.
