Mobile Monday: Mobile Holograms & Evolving AR

Posted May 21, 2018

A new device from the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company and Leia, Inc. is making holographic experiences a reality. Users can fit the new technology in their pockets and take this experience with them anywhere they go.

Mobile Holograms
The Red Digital Cinema Camera Company and Leia, Inc. recently unveiled the Hydrogen One mobile phone, which will be debuting through Verizon and AT&T this summer. The device has a holographic, 5.7-inch display and 3D audio system which replicates watching a 3D movie. Users can still experience a holographic view even when tilting the screen.

So how does this phone work? There is a clear layer underneath the LCD display that has nanotechnology, enabling a 4-view experience. When you’re not viewing 4-view content, the underlying layer stays clear. In the future, the device will also have separate attachments that consumers can purchase for various features, as well as games that will leverage this holographic technology.

Leia, Inc. has also developed a Unity plug-in, which enables anyone to quickly convert their 3D games into holographic ones. Items and animations pop out of the screen, creating a sense of depth while playing. While there will be a default depth setting that the company has determined to be the most comfortable for the majority of players, users will also be able to manually adjust the depth of field themselves.

Evolving AR
Augmented Reality (AR) is enabled on over 500 million devices today. Thousands of AR-compatible apps can be found in the iOS App Store and hundreds more on Google Play. AR continues to grow and evolve, mostly due to Creative, Contextual, and Connected apps.

Creative apps, like Snapchat and Filmr, have incorporated AR technology to allow users to create objects and characters in their environments. Contextual apps, like Google Lens and Entur, use real data to enable a deeper understanding of the real world and add context to it. On top of that, connected apps, like HQ Trivia and Streem, are creating shared experiences and bringing users together.

AR is only set to grow and improve in the coming years. With better connectivity and emphasis on shared experiences, as well as enhanced visuals, AR will soon be incorporated into every kind of app.

GDPR Deadline
The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) goes into effect May 25, 2018. AdColony is more committed than ever to find the balance between respecting user privacy and complying with the legal requirements of all regions we operate in whilst still delivering optimum ROAS for our advertising partners and maximum monetization for our publishing partners.

To make this transition transparent and easy to understand for end-users, as well as our publishers, attribution partners, and advertisers we’ve prepared an FAQ to how AdColony will handle its responsibilities under GDPR.
