Mobile Monday: It’s E3 Week

Posted Jun 11, 2018

While one of the largest mobile events (WWDC) wrapped up last week, the largest annual conference for the gaming in mobile, console, and PC begins tomorrow. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will be held in the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 12th to 14th. The IAB also announced plans last week to bring its programmatic ads.txt safety net and anti-fraud framework to mobile, which could spell good news for everyone except fraudsters.

The show is open to the public starting later in the day Tuesday, but being the biggest show of the year for publishers and hardware makers alike, the show started early, of course, with keynotes from EA, Microsoft, and Bethesda. While the focus of E3 has traditionally been on consoles and PC, mobile has continued to creep into the big keynotes.

EA
Amongst much-anticipated sequels and original IPs, EA announced the RTS classic Command & Conquer would be returning to the world as a  mobile game called Command & Conquer: Rivals. Nostalgic fans of the original franchise can enjoy the great gameplay and over-the-top sci-fi alternate history storytelling they’ve come to expect from the franchise, on a smaller screen.

Bethesda Softworks
The publishers of the Fallout, Elder Scrolls, DOOM, and Rage series, amongst many more, announced it would finally be bringing the Elder Scrolls experience to mobile with Elder Scrolls: Blades. During the presentation, Todd Howard, Executive Director at Bethesda, said the first-person role-playing game would have console-quality graphics and support both touchscreen movement, or dual-stick controls in a fully fledged RPG.

Microsoft
Microsoft, in a keynote that blew most attendee’s socks off, with acquisitions of successful studios and a tease the next Xbox is under development, announced the development of a Gear of War mobile title, in partnership with Funko Pop, Gears Pop aims to combine the rough, dirty, wartorn aesthetic of the Gears universe with the playful and fun Funko look and feel.

Perhaps most interesting for mobile device owners is the announcement that Microsoft is planning on a console-quality game streaming service. The service is still clearly in the early days, but during the Keynote, Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s gaming chief, said, “Our cloud engineers are building a game streaming network to unlock console gaming on any device,” and that the service would work across Xbox, PCs, and phones.

Gear Pop

There will be plenty of more announcements to come from Los Angeles over the next week, so keep an eye out! Don’t forget to check out some of the amazing sessions and talks planned, too!
