He handles everything from delegation to communication between stakeholders and our Skylab Creative Team. His oversight, organization, and management make efficiency and smooth workflow all possible. Meet Erik Harlow, Sr. Project Manager in our LA headquarters! Erik has been at AdColony for 7 years and loves collaborating and exchanging ideas with different teams. During his free time, Erik loves to walk his dogs, cook with his wife, and go on road trips with his family! Step right up, Erik. It’s your turn under the AdColonized spotlight!
What exactly does a Sr. Project Manager, Creative Services do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
I’m AdColony’s distributor cap. All creative projects start with the stakeholders and move to the Creative Team, and I am the point of contact that makes sure that the transfer happens efficiently. Additionally, I handle delegation, project oversight, team metrics, global project management team standards, and issue the Weekly Aurora, Bi-Monthly Launch Alert, and Monthly Creative Highlights reports. I’m an air traffic controller, bartender, diplomat, and RTS veteran, all rolled into one.
Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
My younger sisters might say I’ve been project managing my whole life, but I like to think I was just a bossy big brother. In all seriousness, I got a real taste for project management when I was working as a Content Manager at JIRBO games. I enjoyed the challenges it offered as well as the deep understanding of how tech, creative, and sales all depend on one other to achieve company goals.
What made AdColony the right fit for you?
They offer XXL swag! Really though, it’s the location, the team members, and their peerless dedication to the craft. I am continually in awe of what creative makes with the dev team, guided by the client services team. Truly amazing work. We really are the very best at what we do.
How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
I work closely with my boss, Doug Manson (who won Best Boss award, for anyone who’s counting) to determine company and individual needs for the creative team, and challenge myself to apply the best project management tools for the job. Sometimes, the best tool isn’t in the toolbox, and that’s when I get the joy of diving deep into a rabbit hole. Additionally, I maintain ongoing dialog with the dev and client services teams to better understand what they need and how best to approach those needs with process-oriented solutions.
What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
My hobbies include walking our dogs with our kids, creative home improvement, creative writing, cooking and baking with my wife, hiking, camping, and taking road trips with the family, especially north along the California coast. I read in fits and bursts, play the bass guitar, violin, and cello, and I love to paint and draw. I have been part of a standing weekend game group for 18+ years, and I am a nerd. I love volunteering at the food bank and my church.
Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
Kabam’s Marvel Contest of Champions! It’s a rhythm fighter – think Soul Calibur or Street Fighter – with 3D rendered Marvel characters. This weekend, I logged a 29-win streak in PvP, something most of the forums claim is only possible through botting. *blows the dust off fingertips* Oh yeah, I’m still relevant…
What’s one thing not many people know about you that you’re willing to share?
I was part of a government program when I was 12 and went to college at Cal State Los Angeles instead of middle school. Really. I still have the college ID. =)
Do you have a nickname at work? If so, is there a story behind it?
Harlow. My last name is my nickname, because there are so many Eriks and Erik variants everywhere I go.
What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
Just one, huh? I have seven years of great memories to sift through…. I guess if it has to be just one, it was taking the party bus to meet everyone at the Bellagio for the AdColony ONE Las Vegas offsite. Gangnam Style was still a thing. Everything else has to stay in Vegas.
