Supernova Summit 2018: Recap

Posted Sep 14, 2018

Last week, the AdColony Publishing and Performance teams met with clients in Snoqualmie, Washington, just outside of Seattle, for two days of industry conversations, sessions, networking, and activities. The conversations covered important emerging trends in both the user acquisition and app monetization spaces, including advanced mediation, playables, attribution, rewarded video, and more.

After nine months of planning, the Salish Lodge (which David Lynch fans may recognize as The Great Northern Hotel from Twin Peaks) hosted more than fifty guests, starting with a Pub Olympics kick off on Wednesday and things took off from there!

Speech Topics
Thursday morning started off with a breakfast, but swiftly moved to two tracks guests could attend – performance or monetization. The sessions were all designed to be more than most events’ standard panelists pontificating. No stages. No microphones. Just small groups and direct, frank, conversations about the industry. Our AdColony moderators all encouraged attendees to speak up, ask questions, share experience, best practices, and really get to the heart of the topics.

On the performance side, attendees talked about the Changing State of Performance, Playables Best Practices, and the importance of Measurement and Attribution. On the monetization side, a frank conversation advanced mediation with MoPub and Fyber kicked things off, followed by Rewarded Video Best Practices, and concluding with integration and implementation discussions focused around Interstitials.

“The quality of conversation, insights shared and questions asked at the monetization sessions provided a valuable window into topics that are top of mind for publishers,” said Anand Ramesh, Managing Director, Americas at MoPub (a Twitter company).

Guests were free to flip back and forth and many expressed delight at being able to learn about the other side of the mobile app coin by listening in on the other side’s sessions.

Compass Outdoor Games

It wouldn’t be a retreat without some activities to let attendees relax! We partnered with Compass Outdoor Adventures for a “Goosechase” scavenger hunt after the sessions, (app-based, naturally) leading to a mountain bike ride amongst some of the Pacific Northwest’s most picturesque views.

For those who felt more comfortable with engines instead of pedal power, a bus tour showed attendees the beautiful Snoqualmie Falls, as well as highlights from Twin Peaks, which was filmed in Snoqualmie. Although TP was filmed over 25 years ago some remembrance of the set stay intact like the very car Sheriff Harry Truman, Michael Ontkean cruised in.

Farm to Table Dinner
Both the bike ride and the bus tour wound their way around the hills, mountains, and forests just East of Seattle to Fall City Farms, which provided an authentic small farm dining experience. We were able to meet the friendly farm animals, play games and cool down before dinner. Delicious cured meats, pickles, and preserves were waiting for us and the beef brisket sliders were just what we needed after a full day of activity.

“The AdColony Team went above and beyond with this Summit,” said Kyle Sye, Color Switch’s head of business development, “One of the best industry events I’ve ever been to. AdColony was able to bring amazing talent, experience and thoughtful sessions together and I will definitely be attending the next event!”

Future Supernova Summit Plans
The overwhelming opinion of client and partner guests at the first-ever Supernova Summit event was that it was a huge hit! The intimate environment, experienced industry veterans sharing the experience and learning together was an experience not often offered in the highly competitive mobile industry and everyone was eager for information on the next event!

Stay tuned for more news on future Supernova Summits and other events in the series. We have plans and ideas aplenty!
