AdColonized: Getting to Know Eric Treworgy

Posted Feb 28, 2019

Meet Eric Treworgy, a Principal Software Engineer at AdColony NA. Eric is a code-savvy wizard working on our Technology team. His day to day consists of ad serving, and managing the event pipeline along with a handful of other dev supporting services. When Eric isn’t being a genius at AdColony he’s waking up early to catch waves and/or going for a run. His favorite pastime is indulging in board/video games with friends. Get to know more about Eric in his AdColonized feature!

What exactly does a Principal Software Engineer I do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
I’m currently on a team who’s responsible for a wide variety of backend services. Our primary responsibilities are around ad serving (what ads get delivered where) and the event pipeline (collecting and processing all actions that happen at the sdk level – from ad requests to impressions to app installs). There’s a handful of supporting services that we develop and maintain as well.

My days can vary greatly. An ideal day is one where I can just focus on writing code — developing new features or making improvements to the existing code — but most days there’s a few other things going on. I provide support to other teams, do investigation work when problems arise, and work with the product team to help figure out specs and priorities.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
I worked for two different companies before coming to AdColony (Jirbo at the time). The first was a small company that created a software assisted system for teaching golf. It had all been written by one guy who no longer was with the company, and it was a mess. It helped me become quite comfortable digging into complex software that was written by someone else, something that most software engineers don’t enjoy doing (it’s usually much easier and nicer when you’re starting from scratch).

The second was a library software company based out in Utah. I got to work with some talented engineers there and learned a lot about how to coordinate work across different roles and teams in a functional way.

What makes AdColony the right fit for you?
The flexibility and balance. I have the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects and different teams. This allows me to keep learning and stay interested in my work. I also appreciate a good work-life balance. I work hard to get my tasks done and done well, but I also take full advantage of the flexible work hours and unlimited RTO.

AdColony values employee development. How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
We dedicate some time to deliberately expanding and developing our skills through books or exercises, but the majority of learning happens organically. As a software engineer you encounter new problems on a regular basis and it’s up to you and the team to figure out how to solve it. We’ve got some good engineers here too, so we learn a lot from each other too.

How do you act as a resource for the rest of your team?
I’ve been at AdColony almost 8 years and worked on different teams and projects over the years. I have a lot of knowledge to share thanks to those experiences.

Is there someone you turn to personally or professionally?
Brandon Chau and I get regular pre-work surf sessions in, which helps us blow off steam before coming into the office. We’ve been through a lot together over the last 8 years. I’ve got a lot of respect for Josh Connor too. He’s a great manager and engineer and is constantly working to improve himself and his teams.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
I’m a morning person, so i’m usually up a few hours before work to go surfing, running, or do some gardening. I play soccer in the evenings and on the weekend my wife and I like to either get to the beach for volleyball or get out of town to go backpacking. Board games and video games with friends is also a favorite pastime.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
I try to use my phone as little as possible. There are too many other things to do, and I find most apps to be unsatisfying distractions.

Tell us one or two fun facts about you.
I’ve hitchhiked over a thousand miles and through more than 10 different countries.

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
Hard to pick one moment. My fondest memories are when a bunch of us would play video games in the office after work back in the early days.

What are you listening to lately? (music, podcasts, etc.)
Most recently I bounce between lo-fi chillhop, KCRW, and Skeletonwitch.

What are you looking forward to most in the next 5 years?
Buying a home.

Eric also has a fluffy friend named Tashi!
