AdColonized: Getting to Know Maggie Chen

Posted Jul 11, 2019

Say hello to Maggie Chen, Product Marketing Manager based in San Mateo! As a Product Marketing Manager, Maggie works with the product and engineering teams to effectively bring products to the market. When not working, she enjoys camping, going to soccer games, and makes amazing macarons! Get to know Maggie in this week’s AdColonized feature!

What exactly does a Product Marketing Manager do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
Product Marketing is all about taking what the product and engineering build and bringing them to the market mostly through our commercial teams. I spend a lot of time learning about commercial challenges and helping the product team develop solutions and then documenting and training our teams to take advantage of what we build. I also manage most of our GDPR efforts, so I spend a good amount of time answering questions and keeping us compliant.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
I came from a background doing technical account management and product in Search and Social, which gave me a good ad tech background to prepare me for my time at AdColony. While here, I’ve had the opportunity to be on different teams and do many different roles.

What makes AdColony the right fit for you?
I like that AdColony is a mobile-first global company so I’m always learning and getting different perspectives from the various teams I work with. It’s also been great to be able to try different teams and different roles.

AdColony values employee development. How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
I’ve learned over the years that I never know all the answers, so I ask a lot of questions and make an effort to learn something from everyone I meet. I also assume I don’t know all the answers, so I can be open to learning what I miss.

How do you act as a resource for the rest of your team?
Because I’ve worked with so many teams, I’ve had the privilege to meet a lot of people, so I can connect people when questions come up.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
I like to cook and try new recipes on the weekends. I also spend time with my family going camping or visiting local attractions. In the fall, we spend a lot of time going to soccer games.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
I’m a big fan of the Libby app where you can borrow books from the library to read or listen to, it’s so great to be able to borrow books in an instant and I love that it’s free and available to anyone with a library card.

Tell us one or two fun facts about you.
I started off my career as a hardware engineer, but then the internet called, and I’ve never looked back. I also make really good french macarons.

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
I liked going to a baseball game with the San Mateo office. San Mateo is a small office, but pretty spunky. It’s a fun place to be.

What are you listening to lately (music, podcasts, etc.)?
My friend and old co-worker has a podcast about caregiver families called Who Lives Like This. It really inspires me and puts things into perspective.

What are you looking forward to most in the next 5 years?
I’m really interested in seeing how technology evolves, and how society finds a balance between being human and taking advantage of what tech can bring us. That and self-driving cars.
