Meet Qasim Karim, our Management Accountant based in London! When he’s not handling financial matters for the company, he enjoys spending time with his two children and watching anime. Get to know Qasim in this week’s AdColonized!
What exactly does a Management Accountant do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?
As the Management Accountant, essentially I am responsible for all financial matters. I focus on financial security for the company, by helping management understand the financial implications of business decisions so that they can drive growth, with a knock-on effect of improved profitability. I work with local tax authorities, suppliers, buyers, auditors, and many more stakeholders to help maintain good working relationships. Developing and managing accounting procedures and making sure all of the financials are compliant with accounting policies.
Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony & how they have prepared you for your role here.
Since I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be an Accountant. Went on to study Accounting and Finance at university, then my journey to build a finance career began. I started working in the finance department of one of the largest U.S. law firms, where I gained invaluable experience and met some really lovely people.
What makes AdColony the right fit for you?
First of all, personally I’d like to say AdColony is a fantastic place to work! The people here are all inspirational, wonderful, and a delight to work alongside. AdColony’s atmosphere allows us to strengthen our strengths and opens up the chance for us all to thrive together.
AdColony values employee development. How do you keep growing & learning in what you do?
I joined AdColony in 2015 as an Assistant Accountant, I was responsible for basic administrative finance tasks and reported directly to the Finance Manager and Management Accountant. I have always been proactive to learn more (even if it was after work), taking on more responsibilities and learning from all my wonderful colleagues. I learned so much over the years and today I am the Management Accountant.
Love quotes, I read this on a billboard on the way to work one day:
“Funny how many nights it takes to become an overnight success.”
How do you act as a resource for the rest of your team?
My team comes to me if they need help with anything. As I started as a junior and progressed to management means I have a wealth of experience. Also if I come across something new, then personally I go away to learn and develop, as I feel like it helps the team. Teamwork makes the dream work.
What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?
My two little children Aamani (2.5 years) and Ayden (0.5 years) keep me very busy in most of my spare time. I love getting involved, taking them out, and playing with them. Aamani is on a journey of self-discovery and has tea parties with her toys or builds legos or puts jigsaw puzzles together, while Ayden just wants to be with me while I do things around the house. Other than that, I love watching Netflix in my spare time which has some great series. Plus, I am a Marvel fan, love all the Marvel movies! (used to watch all the cartoons as a kid).
Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?
Clash Royale – building up my deck and having battles with other users around the world, it’s quite fun. I’m a member of a clan where we have clan wars versus other clans. We win some and lose some, but keep on going. Plus, it has other battle options and you can get paired up with someone random in a 2v2 battle or you can play on your own in a 1v1 battle. And you get plenty of rewards for playing the game!
Tell us one or two fun facts about you.
1. Between the ages of 14-18 I used to help out at a local car garage, became quite the mechanic.
2. I watch anime (my top 4 are Dragonball Z, One Punchman, Baki; and FullMetal Alchemist).
What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?
We have an office lunch every Wednesday, which brings us all together mid-week. Plus we get to play games on the PlayStation4 in the office during our spare time, like one of the most popular games at the moment is Fifa19.
What are you listening to lately (music, podcasts, etc.)?
Mainly listen to R&B or Hip Hop or UK rap songs. Plus, Classical music as well (two favourites are: Ludovico Einaudi and Nils Frahm)
