Highlights from Supernova Summit 2019

Posted Sep 16, 2019

In September, the AdColony Publishing and Performance teams invited valued clients to the annual Supernova Summit in beautiful Napa, CA. The two-day event was held in the heart of wine country at the Meritage Resort and Spa. Partners from across the globe gathered to share insights and knowledge around user acquisition and app monetization. Interactive sessions were paired with fun activities for a casual yet informative environment among industry peers. Here are some highlights from another successful Supernova:

Informative Discussions at Unified and Breakout Sessions
After an evening of settling in at the resort and catching up over food and drinks, attendees started Thursday morning with a Unified Session entitled “Whose responsibility is it to secure LTVs?” David Pokress, our EVP of Global Publishing, and Vikas Gulati, our Head of Global Performance & MD, APAC, hosted this discussion on balancing user acquisition and monetization goals when securing LTVs. Jarkko Rajamäki, VP Advertising at Rovio, gave his thoughts during the panel. “It’s important to make sure that these goals are aligned,” Jarkko said. “At Rovio, we set granular targets that are not contradictory to each other.” Jesse Hurwitz, Senior Director of Monetization Products at Jump Ramp Games, spoke about having campaigns on a two-week cycle for continual optimization and the need to always look for new sources to engage with users.

After the first unified session, attendees joined breakout sessions on user acquisition and monetization. Split discussions allowed for smaller groups to engage in casual and interactive conversations on relevant rapid-fire topics. The UA group focused on transparency, CPI vs. ROAS, and new incrementality while the monetization group touched on app-ads.txt and advanced bidding.

The second unified session was titled “When New Formats & Old Standards Meet: The Link Between Creative Optimization and Monetization” and led by Troy Nicolaou, our Sales Director, Performance and Alasdair Pressney, our Senior Product Manager. The panel discussed how to manage monetization on a creative without compromising user experience on the product side. Mary Kim, Head of Growth at Game Hive spoke about conducting weekly creative testing to find a balance between high ROAS and high CTR. Harrison Botwick, Head of Revenue at Lucky Day emphasized creating strong links between UA, monetization, and creative teams to ultimately drive revenue growth. “The goal should be identical for all teams,” Harrison said. “It’s all about making sure margin is positive.”

An Afternoon of Kayaking and Wine Tasting
With lots of new insights shared, attendees were treated to their choice of a fun activity in Napa. For the outdoorsy types, we had a kayaking trip down the Napa River. The perfect California weather made for a great afternoon on the water. Another group experienced a wine tasting and informative tour at the Domain Carneros winery. After a relaxing tasting on the patio, the group took a quick tour of the facility to learn about how sparkling wine is made.

Going Underground for a Wine Cave Dinner
Following a busy day of discussions and activities, guests were invited to a candlelit dinner at the Meritage Resort’s Estate Wine Cave. The elegant space was the perfect setting for delicious food, flowing wine, and casual conversations with colleagues and peers. As time at this year’s Supernova was winding down, everyone made their way to the pool cabanas for more chats and nightcaps.

Overall, the response regarding this year’s Supernova Summit has been very positive. “Even though the mobile adtech world is already interconnected, spending time with others in smaller, intimate events helped me have conversations that might not have happened in a traditional conference setting,” said Conner Plant from GSN Games. Guests enjoyed the casual networking opportunities and have enthusiastically expressed wanting to return for next year’s event!
