AdColonized: Steve Dunkley

Posted Nov 14, 2019

Meet Steve Dunkley, Senior Growth Manager in our Berlin office! As a part of the performance team, Steve’s day is full of communicating with clients and collaborating with the Account Management teams. When he’s not working, Steve can be found training for his next cyclocross race. Get to know Steve in this week’s AdColonized feature!

What exactly does a Senior Growth Manager do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?

The Senior Growth Manager role has me working on the demand side of our performance business. It’s a blend of sales and business development of new advertisers, and optimizing, upselling, and expanding existing accounts. It involves a very collaborative effort with the Account Management teams.

In a typical day I might send a few outreach emails, have a couple calls with prospective clients, then hopefully sign a massive IO and launch an awesome new campaign. I use a couple of market intelligence tools to keep my finger on the industry pulse, and I spend a lot of time in MetaMarkets making sure everything is on the right trajectory.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony and how they have prepared you for your role here.

I’ve been involved in user acquisition for Free-to-Play games since 2010, working at a few ad networks and affiliate platforms, first back home in Canada and now out here in Berlin. I think it’s helped me develop a pretty good understanding of the buying context of performance advertisers. I’ve spent some time as a self-employed affiliate marketer, and as a freelance performance marketing consultant, where I helped a couple small startups set up their paid marketing channels. I’ve also been a line cook and a car salesman.

What makes AdColony the right fit for you?

I mentioned my affiliate background, so I know first-hand that there are a lot of shady companies out there. In my opinion, when it comes to mobile user acquisition there are only about 10 to 15 companies in total with which I would spend my own money — and that’s 10 to 15 out of thousands! AdColony is one of these companies. Our offering delivers real value, and it’s one that I can feel proud to represent.

AdColony values employee development. How do you keep growing and learning in what you do?

Berlin is a bit of an AdTech hub with a fairly tight-knit community. There are lots of industry meetups, and knowledge-sharing in general among friends in the space. I also try to extract a little bit of industry knowledge every time I’m on a client call.

Is there someone you turn to personally or professionally?

We have Niels Beenen here in Berlin. He’s been in the digital media space for a long time so he knows his stuff, and he’s Dutch, so I can always count on him to be direct and to the point.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?

I race cyclocross. I think it’s among the most ridiculous things you can do on a bike.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?

I’m a big fan of Komoot. It’s a Berlin-based company, and their app helps me plan cycling routes through the forests surrounding the city.

Tell us one or two fun facts about you.

The bicycles:m² ratio in my apartment is about 1:10. That is to say that there is one bicycle for every 10m² of livable space.

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?

At the 2018 Summer Party we went to the Crystal Maze in London. I had never heard of the Crystal Maze, but apparently it was a game show that helped shape the adolescent lives of my London colleagues. They were pretty excited about the whole thing.

What are you listening to lately (music, podcasts, etc.)?

Currently my favorite song is an acoustic cover of Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love”, performed by Daniela Andrade. I could also list a few cycling podcasts but I think I’ve maxed out the cycling content limit for one AdColonized post.

What are you looking forward to most in the next 5 years?

Within the next 5 years my partner and I plan to start a family. That’s something that I’m both looking forward to and terrified of. There are some heroic Dads in our company — Nathan Boyer, Francis Tinney, Will Dorling, to name a few — and I admire these guys.
