AdColonized: Frank Chang

Posted Dec 12, 2019

Meet Frank Chang, Application Engineer Director in our San Mateo office! Frank and his team work tirelessly to troubleshoot issues that pop up on the AdColony ad serving platform. When he’s not working, he loves to spend time with his family and maybe even catch a UFC event on the weekend. Get to know Frank in this week’s AdColonized feature!

What exactly does an Application Engineer Director do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?

I work with my team to look at different issues that occur on our ad serving platform, from ad serving problems to reporting discrepancies or displaying creatives on the device. A typical day is working through the various issues that pop up and trying to figure out what caused it or make sense of why it’s happening.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony and how they have prepared you for your role here.

Prior to AdColony, I worked in the telecommunications sector in a similar role. The platform I supported was sending text messages across different phone carriers like AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, etc. The job gave me a lot of experience working with mobile phones and I just needed to learn the advertising side of the business once I joined AdColony.

What makes AdColony the right fit for you?

I think my job fits my natural curiosity to figure out why something is not working like it’s supposed to. I like to fix things and put it back in order. I also like to help people out when I can.

AdColony values employee development. How do you keep growing and learning in what you do?

I try to keep up-to-date on industry news by reading articles or going on forums. Occasionally, I also take some courses on Skillshare if I want something thorough and structured.

How do you act as a resource for the rest of your team?

A lot of my team are overseas and in different time zones. I’m typically a liaison for them when they need something from the Product or Engineering teams here in the US. And vice versa happens from me to them.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?

I have two boys: one and four years old. Most of my time outside of work is focused on raising them and making sure they don’t eat things off the floor. Occasionally, I sneak in a UFC event on the weekend after putting the kids to sleep, as I’m a big MMA fan.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?

Recently I’ve been using Aliexpress more as I discovered I can get items cheaper than on Amazon as long as I don’t need it right away.

Tell us one or two fun facts about you.

We named our two cars: Carly (Acura RDX) and Marly (Acura MDX).

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?

Our last company event where we went horseback riding was fun (the wine helped). Also, Bingo was fun too, but that’s probably because I won that day.

What are you listening to lately (music, podcasts, etc.)?

For some reason, Tears for Fears and A-Ha are coming back on my playlist. Must be a flashback-to-the-90’s thing.

What are you looking forward to most in the next 5 years?

Watching my kids grow and listening to the funny things that come out of their mouths.
