Mobile Monday: Global Ad Spend to Grow 4.3% in 2020, The Most Downloaded Game Apps of the Decade

Posted Dec 16, 2019

The 2010s was undeniably a banner decade for mobile games. As the adoption of smartphones grew around the world, more consumers were turning to mobile games for convenient entertainment. The most downloaded game apps of the decade have been revealed and the results might surprise you. Meanwhile, global ad spend is expected to grow by 4.3% in 2020. Get all the details in this week’s Mobile Monday!

The United States, China, and India Are the Largest Advertising Markets
According to Zenith Media, global ad spend is forecasted to rise by 4.3% in 2020. Throughout the decade, demand for advertising has grown consistently. The expected growth in 2020 is below the average of the decade which has been 5.1% since 2010. Major brands have had to maintain brand awareness in crowded markets by maintaining continuous campaigns to reach wide audiences. Smaller businesses have also upped their advertising by running targeted campaigns on digital platforms which have, in turn, created more demand in the market.

The United States’ advertising market is forecasted to grow by $39.1 billion between 2019 and 2022, while China will grow by $10.3 billion. Both countries will make up 56% of all growth in ad expenditure over the next three years. India is the third-largest contributor, which is expected to grow by $4.3 billion between 2019 and 2022. At current development rates, India could surpass China by the mid-2020s as the main source of growth in Asia-Pacific, and the second-biggest in the world.

Subway Surfers was the Most Downloaded Mobile Game of the Decade
App Annie released their list of the most downloaded apps and games of the decade and Subway Surfers came out on top for mobile games. The Kiloo game had a huge audience in India which accounted for over 15% of its all-time downloads from both the App Store & Google Play. Candy Crush Saga and Temple Run 2 rounded out the top three for most downloads.

As for the top games for consumer spend, Clash of Clans has the top spot, followed by Monster Strike in second, and Candy Crush Saga in third. Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga were the only two games to appear on both the top apps by downloads and consumer spend lists. App Annie also noted that there was a 5% increase in downloads and a 15% rise in consumer spend year-over-year in 2019 with growth expected to continue in 2020.
