In the past few months, people are being encouraged to stay at home in order to ensure their health and safety. During this outbreak, we have noticed a surge in traffic of mobile gaming and wanted to find out more about how mobile gaming behavior has been affected after the COVID-19 in Japan.
We asked Japanese mobile gamers how frequently they play, what games they are into, their preferences of getting extra in-game contents, and so on. We’ve also pulled out some data from our partner, Apptopia on the game genres that showed uptrends in downloads for the past few months. Check out the habits and preferences of mobile gamers in Japan!
Survey Highlights
- People are playing mobile games more frequently — Nearly 40% of respondents are playing mobile games more frequently since the outbreak. Female tend to play more frequently than male
- Massive mobile gaming uplift — 77% of respondents play mobile games multiple times a day and 49% play more than 40 minutes a day
- Puzzle/word games are the most popular — 41% of respondents play puzzle/word games as it appeals to all ages & users
- Mobile gaming is considered as socializing — 40% consider mobile gaming as one of the ways of socializing during the lockdown
- Rewarded video ads are more preferred for extra in-game contents — 72% prefer to watch rewarded video ads when they need extra lives during gameplay rather than purchase IAP
- Increase in online consumption — Overall online consumption has increased including +21% for app downloads/IAP and +43% for grocery/household items
- Upward download trend in key game genres — Arcade, board, card, casual, and simulation games showed uptrend in download since the lockdown

About the Study
AdColony Mobile Gaming Survey After COVID-19 asked 203 people living in Japan a series of questions about their mobile behavior during the COVID-19 outbreak. Respondents’ ages ranged from 18 to 64 and were typically aged 25 to 54 and had an equal gender split.
