Mobile Monday: App Usage Reaches an All-time High, 35 Billion New Apps Downloaded in Q2

The past few months have seen huge growths and shifts in the mobile app world. Mobile app usage, downloads, and consumer spend are reaching record-high numbers. App Annie’s recent data reveals that mobile app usage has reached an all-time high. They also reported that consumers downloaded nearly 35 billion new apps. Mobile App Usage Surged 40% in Q2 2020

According to new data from App Annie, time spent in mobile apps reached a monthly all-time high of over 200 billion hours during April 2020. Additionally, mobile app usage surged 40% year-over-year in Q2 2020. These huge growths are undoubtedly caused by people leaning on mobile during the global pandemic. In India, time spent in apps grew 35% in Q2 2020 from Q4 2019. Meanwhile, Italy, Indonesia, and the United States have all had 30%, 25%, and 15% growth respectively. 

The Apple Store generated $17 billion in Q2 2020, growing 15% year-over-year. Consumer spend rose 25% year-over-year on Google Play to $10 billion. The United States and China were the largest contributors to consumer spend on iOS for the quarter, while the United States and Japan were the largest drivers of quarter-over-quarter growth. On Google Play, the U.S., Japan, and South Korea were the three largest markets for consumer spend, with the U.S. and Japan driving the largest growth from Q1 2020.

Consumers Downloaded Nearly 35 Billion New Apps in Q2 2020

App Annie reported that Q2 2020 was the largest quarter not only for mobile app usage and consumer spend but also downloads. App Store downloads grew 20% to almost 10 billion new downloads in Q2. Google Play garnered 25 billion downloads, a 10% year-over-year growth. India, Brazil, and Indonesia were the biggest drivers for growth in Q2 2020 on Android. On the other hand, the United States and Saudi Arabia were the main drivers of download growth on iOS.

In terms of downloads, Games, Photo and Video and Entertainment have remained the largest categories on the App Store for four straight quarters. The need for video conferencing made Business apps the largest driver of overall download growth on iOS. Games, Tools, and Entertainment were the largest by downloads on Google Play. While the Games category was the largest driver of download growth quarter over quarter on Google Play, Business, Health & Fitness, and Education and have all seen strong quarter-over-quarter growth in downloads of 115%, 75%, and 50% respectively.
