AdColonized: Getting to Know Beenu Maharjan

Posted May 12, 2021

Meet Beenu Maharjan, a Senior SDET I working out of our Seattle office! Outside of leading her team at AdColony, Beenu likes to spend time outside and with her family. In fact, a few years ago, Beenu went to Langtang Valley and hiked to an altitude of 5,000 meters! Get to know her better in this week’s AdColonized employee spotlight!

What exactly does a Senior SDET I (Software Development Engineer in Test) do at AdColony? What’s an average day like for you?

As a Senior SDET in the SDK team, I own end-to-end testing of our iOS SDK before GA. I put together a test strategy, write plan/test cases for new features, and execute and automate those tests where possible. In between releases, I spend my time improving our test framework and infrastructure while adding missing test scenarios and automating them.

Tell us a little about your experiences prior to joining AdColony and how they have prepared you for your role here.

Prior to joining AdColony, I worked at Visa and Microsoft. During my time in Bing (Microsoft), I learned about scaling a system and the importance of test infrastructure to emulate customer scenarios. I learned to be independent and efficient on testing on a tight deadline while working at Visa, which I believe helps my day-to-day operations even today at AdColony.

What makes AdColony the right fit for you?

I’ve been with AdColony for five years now, and I love what I do. I like the work-life balance while I get to work on challenging problems every day. I recently had my second baby, and the flexibility to work on my own time has been beneficial.

AdColony values employee development. How do you keep growing and learning in what you do?

I love to solve problems and learn new technologies. The ad and mobile domains were complete strangers to me before joining AdColony. I had to learn almost all of these technologies as part of my work. It has been a fun ride so far.

How do you act as a resource for the rest of your team?

Given my tenure in the team and the company, I have gathered ample knowledge, especially within the iOS SDK space. I make myself available to my team to help them with any questions they may have. I am approachable and do not mind jumping into the trenches if needed.

Is there someone you turn to personally or professionally?

At work, I turn to my manager Jaydeep, who is very knowledgeable and always very helpful. Personally, I go to my husband. He inspires me to be better all the time.

Many global AdColony employees are still working from home. Do you have any work-from-home tips for success you can share?

With a toddler and a 4-month-old kid, it’s a challenge to work from home. I have a designated workspace that helps me focus and get work done.

What are your hobbies or activities that you look forward to doing on the weekends or after work?

I like going on hikes with my family. We want to go to the beach, nearby parks, and have family picnics during sunny days.

Which app is keeping you engaged lately? Why?

I try not to spend lots of time on my mobile. But when I have time, I use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family.

Tell us one or two fun facts about you.

In 2014, I went to Langtang Valley trekking and climbed a peak with an altitude of 5,000 meters. From there, we could see a 360-degree view of the Himalayan range.

What is your favorite moment you’ve had with the AdColony team so far?

All the company events and parties are always fun. But one of my favorites is the summer party and cruise around Lake Washington.

What are you listening to lately (music, podcasts, etc.)?

Baby Shark do do do … With two little kids, it’s hard to listen to anything else these days.

What are you looking forward to most in the next 5 years?

I am looking forward to getting back to traveling again.
