In this edition of Mobile Monday, we are covering how Netflix is offering more data controls for mobile users, how Vimeo users may soon be creating mini-Netflix services of their own, and how Opera is better securing users with a free VPN.
Netflix Quality Controls
Understanding that an ever increasing number of its subscribers wish to watch their favorite shows and movies on the go, Netflix recently released new data controls that let users set the quality of their video streams.
Traditionally, the video streaming service offered videos in the best quality that could be delivered smoothly through the user’s connection. However, this isn’t necessarily ideal when said user is leveraging a data connection that could incur overage charges. With the new tools, users could make 1GB of data last 4 hours, or blast through it in as little as 20 minutes. When left to an automatic setting, that 1GB of data typically lasts 3 hours.
Vimeo’s New Networks
While Netflix is building tech to cater to mobile users, Vimeo appears to be expanding its platform for video creators. The video service recently acquired VHX, a white-label video subscription platform for user-created video distribution networks. Coupling this with Vimeo’s existing paid on-demand video service, users may soon be able to curate, distribute, and sell their own content networks.
By facilitating a myriad of mini Netflixes while standing in direct opposition to YouTube, will Vimeo’s flat rate fee system woo enough publishers over to reach critical mass? It remains to be seen.
Unlimited VPN for Mobile
Alas, what happens if Netflix or Vimeo are blocked by a particular WiFi network? What if they aren’t, but the network is shady and you’re desperate for a connection? Typically, mobile users in these situations have one of two options: find another connection, or connect through VPN. Traditionally, mobile VPN solutions have been subscription based, a deterrent for many.
To alleviate mobile user privacy and budgetary concerns, Opera recently released a new VPN app for iOS. The app is free to use and has no data limitations.
