Mobile Monday: 10 Top App Traits, 33 Million New Devices & 10 New Releases

Posted Feb 1, 2016

In this edition of Mobile Monday, we’re taking a peek at the top 10 traits of successful mobile games, how much time we spend syncing our data onto new mobile phones over the holiday season, and 10 new games Pocket Gamer declares worthy of an install.

10 Traits of Top Games
In a recent article on Entrepreneur, MDM founder Jonathan Long discussed the top 10 characteristics of highly successful and profitable mobile games.  In this top level checklist, Long advocates the inclusion of “surprise and delight” into the mechanics, updating frequently, focusing your individual teams on a given genre, and developing a “monetization depth” that encourages a progression of in-app purchases to maximize the LTV of high spending users.

Holiday Phone Upgrades
The holidays are always a prime season for giving loved ones (or ourselves) new tech toys, and 2015 was no exception. According to Sychronoss Technologies, 33.3 million smartphones were sold in the US alone during the 2015 holiday season, and 19.6 million of these were purchased in store. Of these, 4.5 million shoppers asked the store help to transfer their data for them.

Based on typical store router speeds, the average amount of data transferred, and other calculations by 451 Research, the typical data transfer takes 1 hour. That’s 4.5 million hours of data transfers in-store over the holiday season. Understanding that most users with larger than average data files on their devices opt to sync at home, the total time spent transferring mobile data over the holiday season could’ve easily topped 30-40 million hours.

10 New Games to Check Out
So which games possess at least a few of Long’s top 10 traits and are worthy of checking out after your new phone is synced up? Pocket Gamer recently released a list of the best iPhone and iPad games of January 2016 to solve that very quandary. Topping the list was Crashlands by Butterscotch Shenanigans, Circa Infinity by Kenny Sun, and Twofold Inc. by Webbfarbror. Rounding out the list was Dungelot: Shattered Lands, Punch Club, Lost in Harmony, Sky Chasers, Pocket Mortys, Venture Kid, and Jetpack Fighter.
